Today is Day 8 of the Our Lost Jungle Thirty-By-Thirty Challenge, a challenge designed to help writers and artists foster the habit of engaging in creativity regularly. Whether you are an artist, musician, writer, or other creative type, this challenge is for you.

Each day in June will feature a prompt to help inspire you. Take on the prompt, or follow your own creative path! Please feel free to share your work here, post links to your work on your own blog or website, or just follow along (and share your progress)!

day 8. smile

Sometimes it takes a while for inspiration for a prompt to strike. After a long day of work, I got into my apartment, turned on the television, and started scrolling through channels. It took me no more than five minutes to land on BBC America, where I discovered that they were playing one of my all-time favorite movies ... Hook. And even better: the film had reached one of my favorite scenes in cinema. As the Lost Boys try to determine if Peter Banning really is Peter Pan, one little boy approaches the grown man and begins playing with his face. As he slowly crinkles Peter's face, discovering long-faded laugh lines and forcing his mouth into a smile, he softly proclaims, "Oh, there you are, Peter!" This scene gets me every single time. And I found today's prompt. Write a smile. Paint a smile. Bake, saute, or boil a smile. Sing a smile. Find the smile that's hiding in your world today, and bring it to life with your creative art.

  1. An interesting side note about the song "Smile" which you (and your readers) may or may not know...the music...the instrumental composition, was written by Charlie Chaplin for his movie Modern Times. That tiny factoid always makes me smile.
