30x30: day 23. persona

Today is Day 23 of the Our Lost Jungle Thirty-By-Thirty Challenge, a challenge designed to help writers and artists foster the habit of engaging in creativity regularly. Whether you are an artist, musician, writer, or other creative type, this challenge is for you.

Each day in June will feature a prompt to help inspire you. Take on the prompt, or follow your own creative path! Please feel free to share your work here, post links to your work on your own blog or website, or just follow along (and share your progress)!

day 23. persona

Today, take on a persona. Write a character who is the exact opposite of yourself, or someone you know well. Write a poem in the voice of a loved one, or a stranger. Write a creative nonfiction piece on the life of a neighbor ... whether you know them well or not. Write a love song between your checkout person at a grocery store and the produce you buy. Make a meal in opposition to your usual tastes. Use colors you'd never typically use or put together in a new art piece. Slip out of your own skin and embrace the skin of another.

30x30: day 22. monkey business

Today is Day 22 of the Our Lost Jungle Thirty-By-Thirty Challenge, a challenge designed to help writers and artists foster the habit of engaging in creativity regularly. Whether you are an artist, musician, writer, or other creative type, this challenge is for you.

Each day in June will feature a prompt to help inspire you. Take on the prompt, or follow your own creative path! Please feel free to share your work here, post links to your work on your own blog or website, or just follow along (and share your progress)!

day 22. monkey business

The next installation of the current Planet of the Apes series is due out next month. The film series, from the first series beginning in 1968 to the series of the 2000s, has dealt compellingly with the nature of animalism versus humanity. It calls us to question who is the animal: who is the hero, man or ape? Even as we root for Charlton Heston's astronaut George Taylor in the original film, it's hard to ignore the blatant use of human logic and ideology against us ... and in some regards despite Taylor's apparent "superiority" it's hard to deny that he believes himself a bit more superior than he actually is. Today, let's talk monkey business. Write a "monkey see, monkey do" scenario. Redefine what it means to "go ape." Bake monkey bread. Slip the focus away from humans and focus on the monkey!

day 21. you are here ...

Where are you? We've all seen those (sometimes less than helpful) maps in malls and other locations that indicate "You are here" in relation to other locations. Sometimes they can be pretty hard to interpret. It's hard to know exactly where we are ... both in space, and time, and in general life. Today, focus on where you are, right now. What is your "here"? How can you interpret that in artistic form? Define your "here" in whatever you create today!

day 20. "how sweet the sound"

Amazing grace. The sweet sound of words we needed to hear. The hills alive with the sound of music. There are many sounds that are sweet to our ears. It could be a song. A string of words. The sound of a meal baking, cereal crackling, popcorn popping. Think about a sweet sound you love to hear, and use it as the inspiration to your creative work today!

Create something that represents your moving on from whatever it is you need to break up with!

day 17. frenzy!

Have you ever just had a day that was absolutely frenzied?! As in, no matter how hard you tried you couldn't seem to find a single moment in which to breathe? Stressful, isn't it?! Or maybe your version of a frenzied day is a smorgasbord of fun! Think of what a frenzy is and means to you. Maybe it's frazzling. Maybe it's fun. Maybe it's a feeding frenzy, in which case it's delicious! Write, draw, sing, sew, cook, or otherwise create something that represents a frenzy to you! Or, if you're feeling particularly ragged after a frenzied day, create the inverse ... create something calm, something devoid of frenziness!

day 16. sensual

Today, create something sensual. For many, this word instantly calls to mind the idea of "sex appeal" ... but that's not all it can be. Sensual could indicate anything sense-based, and today, for you, it can. And, of course, something can be sexy without being about sex ... language is, itself, sensual, especially when you play with words that roll off the tongue like a kiss. Play today with spices, sounds, and all your senses to create a sensual piece, whether in words or art or something sensual for the pallet.

We're officially halfway through the month of June! Congrats to those who have followed and kept up with the challenge thus far, and good luck to those of you catching up, and to all as we make it through the second half of the month! For today's creative exercise, try to sizzle. Create something that sizzles off the page, in the ear, on the tongue, or before the eye. The body can sizzle as much as a dish on a plate. Sound can sizzle and snap and pop like fire when the right words come together. Even the blues can burn. So go on ... sizzle!

What can you do today? What can you create? Remember, the extraordinary is just the ordinary with a little extra. So find a way to add the extra into your ordinary. Be original. Find your spark. day 13. thirteen

It's Friday the Thirteenth, and to some of you out there, that means something significant. To some of you, it means absolutely nothing ... it's just a Friday, and it happens to be the thirteenth day of the month. In some cultures, the number thirteen is lucky; in some, it's unlucky. For some of us our thirteenth year meant a blossoming into adulthood ... or at least a teenaged version of it. For others, a thirteenth birthday was just like any other, or not so much a coming of age as a loss of innocence. Use the number thirteen as your guide today.

Bake a dish with Z-number of ingredients. How high can you go? Brainstorm a list of all the traits that make your favorite character in your current project a great character ... then write a character who is the exact opposite. Think of all the reasons you struggle as an artist ... then create a piece that counters all those doubts, worries, and struggles. Play the numbers game, and create!

30x30: day 8. smile

day 8. smile

Sometimes it takes a while for inspiration for a prompt to strike. After a long day of work, I got into my apartment, turned on the television, and started scrolling through channels. It took me no more than five minutes to land on BBC America, where I discovered that they were playing one of my all-time favorite movies ... Hook. And even better: the film had reached one of my favorite scenes in cinema. As the Lost Boys try to determine if Peter Banning really is Peter Pan, one little boy approaches the grown man and begins playing with his face. As he slowly crinkles Peter's face, discovering long-faded laugh lines and forcing his mouth into a smile, he softly proclaims, "Oh, there you are, Peter!" This scene gets me every single time. And I found today's prompt. Write a smile. Paint a smile. Bake, saute, or boil a smile. Sing a smile. Find the smile that's hiding in your world today, and bring it to life with your creative art.

What experiences have you had that can inspire your creative expression today? Write a song about a major life event or news story. Create a recipe that captures all the "flavor of life" we get to enjoy just by being human. Paint an important moment in human history .. or your own. Write a story that needs to be told. Sharing is part of human nature ... embrace that part of yourself today.
