Today is Day 9 of the Our Lost Jungle Thirty-By-Thirty Challenge, a challenge designed to help writers and artists foster the habit of engaging in creativity regularly. Whether you are an artist, musician, writer, or other creative type, this challenge is for you.

Each day in June will feature a prompt to help inspire you. Take on the prompt, or follow your own creative path! Please feel free to share your work here, post links to your work on your own blog or website, or just follow along (and share your progress)!

day 9. wicked

As a kid, I always felt strangely sympathetic toward the Wicked Witch of the West. It could be that I also was always annoyed by Glinda, or that I always understood the witch being angry; Dorothy had just popped out of the blue—or grey—dropping houses on her kin. But ultimately, outside of doing anything to get back what was hers and get vengeance for her sister’s death, do we ever really see the Wicked Witch do anything all that wicked? As I grew up, then, I started to wonder … what, really, is “wicked”? What separates a hero in a story from the “villain” trying to stop him or her? And why is it we assume that the hero is really a hero and the villain is really a villain? So today, I prompt you to ponder: What is “wicked”? Write wicked. Sing wicked. Cook or bake wicked (hint: dark chocolate is super wicked). Sew something wicked. Embrace your inner wicked side and go, go, go! (PS: “Wicked” can also mean something more than “bad.” You can be “wicked smart.” “Wicked” can mean “cool.” “Wicked” can mean naughty, mischievous, or superb … as in a “wicked sense of humor.” Find your meaning and play with it!)
