30x30: day 27. “let me fix you”

Today is Day 27 of the Our Lost Jungle Thirty-By-Thirty Challenge, a challenge designed to help writers and artists foster the habit of engaging in creativity regularly. Whether you are an artist, musician, writer, or other creative type, this challenge is for you.

Each day in June will feature a prompt to help inspire you. Take on the prompt, or follow your own creative path! Please feel free to share your work here, post links to your work on your own blog or website, or just follow along (and share your progress)!

day 27. “let me fix you”

As people with creative tendencies, we often also come equipped with an irrepressible desire to fix things. Sometimes this is a good thing: we can fix a friend’s computer, or fix a mistake in editing or paint, or repair a recipe, or “fix” a friend’s mood. Sometimes it’s not so great, especially when our desire to fix tries to overwhelm someone else’s desire not to be helped. Today, think about what it means to try to “fix” something or someone. Write a character who is overwhelmed with the urge, whether those around her/him want it or not. Write a self-reflection about a time you tried to “fix” someone or something and it didn’t work out … or a time that it did. A few years ago I came up with a mini “All-Better” recipe book for some friends; I’d give it to them and then we’d use it to cook a meal to make thing “all-better” on a bad day depending on what was causing the bad things (it had everything from baked mac and cheese to a few choice mixed drinks, to give you an idea of how that worked). Paint how you feel when someone tries to “fix” you. Sing a fix-it song. Play with fixing, and create!
