pep talk v: going home

May Submit-O-Rama: Going Home
We’ve almost reached the end of the May Submit-O-Rama, and guess what? You’re still here. You know what that means? It means you stepped up. It means you’ve overcome your fears (or, at the very least, some of them), and it means you’ve dared to put yourself out there.

As we draw near the end, I want you to know a few things:

1. I’m proud of you. Yes, you. Each and every one of you who participated and submitted at least once … I’m proud of you. Whether you submitted twenty times so far, or will submit your first time tomorrow, I’m proud of you. You’ve done something great, and you deserve to have someone who’s proud of you for it. So if it’s nobody else but me and you, you’ve got that pride in your corner. I hope you’ll carry it with you.

2. You are a lion. Remember the story of Leon the Lion? That’s you. You have been brave this month, and that’s awesome. Carry that with you, too. And remember, even if you only bring out your inner lion once a month, you’ve got it inside you whenever you need it.

3. You’re not finished. Whether you submitted twice, or ten times, or twenty times, or more … your work isn’t over yet. You have journeyed so far, but there’s further to go. But guess what? You’re further now than where you were before, and I have no doubts you can go even further.

4. You’re (still) not alone. Hopefully you saw—here, or in the forums, or on Facebook—that you weren’t in this alone. You belong to a community of writers. Remember to lean on them, rely on them, and share with them. When you have a setback, share it and get encouragement from your fellow writers. When good comes your way, share it and encourage those who may be experiencing a setback. Spread, and feel, the love whenever you can.

Now it’s time to go home. There are still two days left, but you’re almost there. And the question is what you’ll do when you get back to your writing home. Now is the time to make a plan. To figure out how you’ll take what you’ve done this month and keep it going as you move forward onto other things. Whether you set your own submission schedule or simply find ways to reward yourself more often for the writing you’re doing … keep going. And be a lion. And keep going. And know you’re not alone. And keep going. And know I’m proud of you.

And keep going.
